About Gareth

A Welsh Tenor studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Welsh tenor, Gareth James, currently studies with renowned tenor, Timothy Richards, at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

He has had the opportunity to sing with the College’s Chamber Choir on numerous occasions, and for several REPCo events, including Musicals Through the Ages where he performed scenes as Book of Mormon’s: Kevin Price, and Phantom of the Opera’s: Raoul. 

 

Gareth was a member of Only Boys Aloud as well as their Academi where he sung at several prestigious events, with guests including HRH Queen Elizabeth II, the Prime Minister David Cameron, and alongside Bryn Terfel. 

He has recently recorded with critically acclaimed composer/conductor, Dr. Edward Rhys-Harry and is looking forward to working with him again in the future.

 

Gareth has worked alongside the Welsh Musical Theatre Orchestra as a soloist and a chorus member, performing roles from Chicago, Wicked, and Les Misérables. As well as this, he has performed as part of the Musical Theatre Project at RWCMD working as a soloist on scenes including: The Producers, Kinky Boots, and Finding Neverland.

 

Other notable performances include working as a soloist in J. S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Aylesbury Choral Society, as bass soloist for Bridgend Tabernacl’s performances of Ethel Smythe’s Mass in D and Mozart’s Requiem, and as a scholar with the BBC National Chorus of Wales. He also had the opportunity to perform in the 2018 BBC Proms season with BBC NCW. 

 

Gareth was part of the Royal Welsh College’s Chorus for their production of Mozart’s opera: Magic Flute (2018) and their 2019 Summer Opera, Gilbert and Sullivan’s: Gondoliers. He debuted as soloist and lead in RWCMDs production of Mozart’s: Impresario. 

 

Gareth graduated from RWCMD with a First Class Honours degree in Vocal and Opera Performance in July 2020 and is looking forward to continuing his studies with a Masters degree in Musical Theatre, as an Ian Fleming Musical Theatre award holder.
